Dick Francis died today
Feb. 15th, 2010 02:50 am(Yesterday, technically...but my days run from when I get up 'til when I go to bed, so for me it's still today.)
89 years old, had a great run: Jockey, author, airplane taxi-service co-owner, husband, father. His whole family was involved in the creation of his mystery novels. His wife Mary did tons of practical research for them (some of which led to the air taxi company), and apparently the whole family would discuss them around the dinner table. Can you imagine anything better?
I've been reading (and recommending) his books for almost 30 years. Now there's only one more to come. I feel like I've lost a good friend, a friend whose stories I read again and again for the enjoyment that his words and characters bring.
My favorites:
Rat Race
The Sid Halley series: Odds Against, Whip Hand, Come to Grief & Under Orders
The Christmas (Kit) Fielding pair: Break In & Bolt
Enquiry
To the Hilt
There are about 40 or so, and not a stinker in the lot. Go get some from the library, won't you? You won't regret it.
