[personal profile] fairyniamh and [personal profile] mxcatmoon - What does fandom mean to you?

Friendship.

A lot of people ask - hell, I ask - how do you make friends as an adult? Fandom, that's how.

Thank all the gods for giving us the interwebs where we can meet the far-flung weirdos who love the same weird stuff we do.

Who obsessively compare the chemistry of this pair of actors over that pair.

Who write the thrilling escapades of Bartender #2 that we never knew we needed. (Mostly because we hadn't noticed her until then.)

Who nitpick all the plot holes and then fill them in again with fixits.

All my best friends are from fandom, and I couldn't be happier about it.
elderwitty: (Judith and her maidservant - artemesia)
My question (which I didn't have an answer for when I posed it :D ) - Who was the worst-cast actor in a show or movie? (Not necessarily a bad actor - just wrong for the role.).

There was a reboot of The Rockford Files in 2010 and Dermot Mulroney was cast as Jim Rockford.

Now, Jim Rockford spent five years in prison before being pardoned and released. Despite his usual easygoing demeanor, he could be a hard-edged asshole, which he'd have needed to survive in the joint. I like Dermot Mulroney but I've never seen even a hint of an edge on the dude.

I don't think the pilot ever aired.

Bonus: Who should have been cast instead?
Well, Joe Flanigan auditioned for it, and we know he can play a character who's a hardass .... and a bit of an ass. I can picture that.
elderwitty: (ow)
[personal profile] squidgiepdx - "What's a movie that you'd like to see turned into a TV series for more backstory?"

The Philadelphia Story starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and Jimmy Stewart.

I want to know how Tracy and Dext met, got together, and married ... and what went wrong that led to him giving her a facepalm.

Season Three can follow the doings of the movie.

Season Four shows how they make it work this time, how they cope with a baby, and how Mike proposes to Liz.
elderwitty: (sga rodney hand)
[personal profile] brumeier - What book series do you wish someone would turn into a TV series/movie?

The Tim Simpson mysteries by John Malcolm.

Don't worry if you've never heard of this 15-book series. I've never met anyone who has...including librarians and fellow enthusiasts of English mysteries. :D

Tim Simpson is an ex-rugby player who now works in a merchant (investment) bank. One of their funds is comprised of artworks, so their investors can indulge their love of art without having to put up the dosh for a Picasso.

As it's a mystery series, you will be unsurprised to hear that in each book, something goes awry as Tim is trying to acquire - or even just research - a new piece. Facts that could easily end up being art technobabble are woven in seamlessly and enjoyably, and it's a fun way to learn more about art and artists that weren't covered in my schooling.

In an example of everything intersecting, the second in the series is The Godwin Sideboard. Imagine my glee when I turned a corner at the Art Institute of Chicago and saw this:
a black sideboard with 3 drawers, multiple shelves, and 4 doors with glass panels
Sideboard, designed by Edward William Godwin in 1867, made by William Watt, c. 1876. Ebonized mahogany w/glass & silvered brass. Photo by me at the Art Institute of Chicago, 08-11-2011.

I went up one day before the Stargate convention specifically to go to the museum, but didn't expect to find this beauty. I was there to see A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat - which I'd first learned about from Ferris Bueller's Day Off - in person.

There are so many great questions! Day 10 might last a while.

[personal profile] mific What piece of fanfiction would you like to see turned into canon?
Like [personal profile] squidgiepdx, I'm going to do a few.

Stargate Atlantis - there was a tie.
A Farm in Iowa 'verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] sheafrotherdon (47 stories, 168,478 words)
Summary: John inherits a farm, Rodney ends up entirely out of his element, and there is much ado about baseball. Completely AU

and

Fair Trade 'verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] esteefee (17 stories, 83,276 words)
Summary: Everything in life has a price.
AU in which John owns a coffee roastery, Rodney designs exhibits for science museums, Teyla is a physician in internal medicine, and Ronon is an orthopedic surgeon all living in San Francisco.

NCIS - Moving Forward 'verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] BakenandEggs (3 stories, 218,013 words)
Summary: Tony is struggling with Kate's death, his job at NCIS, and the fact that none of his relationships seem to work out. Enter JJ, Paula Cassidy's cousin.

[[personal profile] elderwitty note: It's much more than simply a romance. Tony also works on his career and establishing healthy boundaries with some of his co-workers.]

Hawaii Five-0 - All for Grace by [archiveofourown.org profile] esteefee (7,538 words)
Summary: Written for the h50promptmeme round 1: "When Grace is kidnapped, Steve goes full-on ninja to rescue her. Maybe they can only send one person in to get her, so against all of his protective paternal instincts Danny has to trust Steve to do it, since he's the most capable. Bonus if Steve gets badly injured during all of this. Also, please don't actually hurt Grace. :(

I KNOW IT'S CLICHE AND I DON'T CARE."

BONUS from [personal profile] squidgiepdx: If you're a writer or artist, what work of YOURS would you like to see canon?

It would have to be:
NCIS - How It Should Have Ended (347 words)
Summary: The question:
What fandom that got a series finale was that most appropriate/most satisfying. Bonus: What about it would you have changed, if anything?

The story was born on Day Six of June Something 2019. A show based on it would give us many seasons of Tony competently leading his team in The Big Easy. Solving crimes and maybe even playing piano at his neighborhood bar once in a blue moon.

Want to sparkle up your posts? Here ya go, thanks to [personal profile] prowler. Or go to the original page by [livejournal.com profile] simcatsubame for even more choices (though the links may or may not work, apparently, because they're from photobucket).

Though this one works fine

Question: Who, from any of your fandoms, would you like to pluck out of their fiction-based universe and drop into this universe, in a role such as an elected official or the like?

Josiah Bartlet and the rest of the West Wing crew (except those assholes who were rightfully fired for hazing Ainsley Hayes), so they could fix a bunch of stuff.

I won't be surprised if this is the number one answer today.
elderwitty: a nudibranch, who appears to be smiling (slug of cuteness)
Question: Tell me something about the last fandom thing you wrote. Or the last thing you read. Or the last thing you recced. Or all of them.

I recently trawled through Rough Trade's Past Projects and read a bunch of NCIS, SGA, and H50 fics I hadn't already read. The last one was a Harry Potter/NCIS crossover.

Disturb the Universe by Roberly - 57,257 words
After Sirius escaped from the Dementors, Harry wondered if he had a godmother as well as a godfather. When Gringotts finds the guardianship documents his parents left, Harry’s life changes for the better. Tony DiNozzo may not be godmother material, but he’s sure as hell going to arrest everyone who committed crimes against his cousin.

It combines two of my favorites themes - competent DiNozzo (anyone, really) and bad people getting what they've got coming.
elderwitty: a photo of two 15th century Arabic round bronze boxes & lids, with silver inlay in curves and geometric shapes (Mahmud al-Kurdi - bronze with silver ove)
Question: Who was the first villain you admired, even if only a little? Why?

Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs (though I first saw him the movie Manhunter - based on the book Red Dragon). He was completely in control of every situation, no matter which side of the locked doors he was on.

Wouldn't ever want to meet him, of course, but admired his absolute mastery of his environs.
elderwitty: a headshot of Hetty, my now-deceased calico shorthair kitty (hetty)
Question: Who was the first hero you wanted to be saved by? And from what would you need rescuing?

John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) on Emergency, most likely from a car crash, since that's what a lot of their calls were.

Bonus: Who's a hero you could save?
I could give Constable Fraser (Paul Gross) from Due South precise directions to the Tawny Frogmouth enclosure in the Bird House at the St. Louis Zoo so he could find the hidden MacGuffin he so desperately needs?
elderwitty: (rachel via siriaeve)
Back on track! :D :D :D

Question: If you could go back in time and help create a foundational work (be it book, show, movie, etc.) what would it be and what would your role be?

If you asked 13-year-old me, the answer would be Star Wars. In fact, I wrote a letter to Pinewood Studios in England asking to work on the sequel. (They turned me down in the kindest way possible. I believe they cited child labor laws? Anyway, they were so nice to a clueless Midwestern eighth grader offering her dubious skills on the follow up to the biggest movie of the year.)

Me now? I'd love to be part of making the movie adaptation of Enchanted April. It's one of my favorites, and one of the seven movies that are better than the book (for reasons I can't tell you due to spoilers). Here's the entry from my Movie Rec post:

3) Enchanted April (1992) - two somewhat depressed Victorian housewives (Josie Lawrence and Miranda Richardson) decide to leave their dreary London lives and distant husbands behind and rent a small Italian castle for the month of April. They advertise for women to share the expense, expecting to be able to pick and choose the perfect companions, but only two apply; an elderly widow with firm ideas on how things should be done (Joan Plowright) and a beautiful flapper (Polly Walker) who just wants a break from being grabbed. Despite having seemingly nothing in common, they forge strong friendships, with each other and, unexpectedly, with their husbands (Alfred Molina and Jim Broadbent) who come to San Salvatore, one at the behest of his wife and the other looking for beauty. Breathtakingly gorgeous. Now available on DVD. WHEEE!!!!

Why was I so excited about the DVD thing? It wasn't released until February 2009 - seventeen years later. I love this movie so much I pre-ordered it and paid full price. The clerk at FYE kept asking if I was sure, as he'd never seen me buy anything that wasn't 'Buy 3 Used, Get 1 FREE'. It was worth it and I regret NOTHING! :D
elderwitty: (h50 steve neck)
I'm a little tardy, oops. Went to the Botanical Garden and out to dinner...and then fell asleep in the recliner. LOL!

Question: Day 4: What's your most treasured piece of fandom merch?
The five Stargate cons I attended. Not so much the cons themselves as all the memories of meeting and hanging out with fellow fen. I imagine it's the feeling people who attend sporting events get, being in a crowd of folks who are all unabashedly excited about the same thing I'm unabashedly excited about.

Bonus: What's your most treasured fandom freebie?
The gorgeous drawings done by [personal profile] crysothemis, who, upon deciding to downsize, gave away A BUNCH of her artwork to fellow fans who she knew would appreciate it.

Alt Bonus: What's your most expensive piece of fandom merch?
The photos I took with Stargate actors at the cons. The autographs were included in the ticket, but the photos were extra. Not that I regret the outlay a single bit!
elderwitty: a square silver fruit basket with ivory handle. the sides are vertical slots over a grid of 3 rows of small squares (Josef Hoffman - silver & ivory fruit bas)
Question: What question would you like to see in The June Something? (We'll steal select a couple for the last two days.)

Who was the worst-cast actor in a show or movie? (Not necessarily a bad actor - just wrong for the role.)
Bonus: Who should have been cast instead?
elderwitty: a photo of the Gateway Arch under an awesome orange sunrise reflecting in the clouds (arch sunrise)
Question: What show or movie would you like rebooted? Same premise and storylines, but all new actors, showrunners, writers, technology, and social awareness?

The first one that popped into my mind is WKRP in Cincinnati, but I really don't think it could be done. Radio has changed so much; been standardized and centralized and sanitized, that I don't know how it would work.

On the other hand, fuck it!

If we say there's an independent radio station scratching along and struggling to stay true to the rebellious spirit of rock and roll just 250 miles from the Hall of Fame, then there's our show.

My god, what fun the casting director is gonna have! The costume director had better keep Andy's tight pants, though. :D

Instead of turkeys, Les tries to do a drone drop. They can't fly unassisted, either.

Instead of the General Admission tragedy at the Who concert, there's a shooter at a festival.

Instead of Jennifer's gentlemen friends giving her TVs and cars, they give her stock options.

Johnny's reflexes still get quicker the more he drinks.
elderwitty: a close-up of the center, swirling petals of a deep pink tea rose (Default)
Question: What show or movie original cast would you like to see reunite for an update - where the intervening time has passed and we're getting a view of where they are now along with glimpses on how they got there?

I'd love to catch up with Stargate: Atlantis and see how goes the fight against the Wraith ... and if John and Rodney were finally locked in a closet by their impatient friends and coworkers. How long does it take to travel from Earth to Pegasus now, or did they figure out how to make ZPMs and simply use the Gate for all but the biggest items that just won't fit? Still top secret or declassified? If declassified, how many of the scientists have won Nobels?

I'm also curious how the folks from Jake 2.0 are doing. Are Jake's nanites keeping up with technology or has he fallen behind. And what do his and Diane's kids look like? Damn, I bet they're cute!
elderwitty: a nudibranch, who appears to be smiling (slug of cuteness)

Starts June 15 and runs for 10 days.

Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them. Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?

I would totally expect [personal profile] squidgiepdx to send John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Tony DiNozzo, and Wayne from Letterkenny. Though the question specifies one character, he hasn't limited himself to one answer in any previous answer and, besides, he's so generous that he'd send 'em in multiples anyway. :D

John and Rodney - good company, easy to look at, and you can't separate them.

Tony - good cook (in fanon. I guess that goes to a previous answer, too), and could stand to make some new friends.

Wayne - to try to suck me into the fandom. I watched the first ep this weekend and couldn't stop trying to figure out what exercises he was doing to get his neck that built.
elderwitty: (sga rachel the fabulous)
Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?

Much like [personal profile] brumeier, it's all become one in my brain. The only thing I can think of is that John is pining for Rodney, and can't wait until he stops trying to marry women who are so very wrong for him.
elderwitty: (h50 steve neck)
Day 18: Recall a time when two of your fandoms collided, at least in some way. For example, a song that you fell in love with from one fandom showed up in a second fandom.

Other than what [personal profile] brumeier said about the replicated character pair types found in SGA and H50, I can't think of anything.

Although - having actors from one show appear on another is always odd. See Rachel in an Army (?) uniform on NCIS made me go, 'Bwuh?' for a moment.
elderwitty: a headshot of Hetty, my now-deceased calico shorthair kitty (hetty)
Day 17: Do you prefer art, fic, or vids? Why? Bonus: If someone was to give you a fandom gift, what format would it be?

Fic. I love it. I devour it. I apparently taught myself to read at four because I school was too far away to wait. I've very rarely stopped reading since. Words are like oxygen to the flame of my brain.

Bonus: any format they chose. If somebody is inspired to make me something, I'm certainly not doing anything that might mute their muse.
elderwitty: a square silver fruit basket with ivory handle. the sides are vertical slots over a grid of 3 rows of small squares (Josef Hoffman - silver & ivory fruit bas)
Day 16: Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?

The Sentinel and Marvel's MCU.

I've seen zero episodes of The Sentinel and only two MCU movies (both within the last couple of years). Most of what I know - or believe I know - comes from crossovers and publicity (in the case of the MCU). It's fine because I get to enjoy the most intriguing parts of the fandoms without being outraged by how canon ended.
